Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics

General Description

Although not new in the developed part of the world, the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and ethical leadership are making first steps in gaining popularity in developing countries, with Armenia being not an exception. Nowadays many Armenians can hardly explain what constitutes to be a good corporate citizen, which is quite often confused with engaging in charitable activities. It is obvious that any for-profit entity is mainly concerned with earning and accumulating wealth, but the current worldwide trend is that this is not the only determinant of their existence and long-term success. More and more businesses realize that they do not operate in a vacuum; continuous interaction with different stakeholders is critical, with serious considerations for the environment, economically vulnerable populations, and the society as a whole.

In light of the above, it is therefore paramount to raise ethical competence and integrity standards of local managers for them to succeed in today's competitive and highly demanding world. With this in mind, the given training is aimed at familiarizing the audience with the theoretical framework for corporate social responsibility and business ethics, addressing the issues of its practical application, and exploring its contributions and limitations to the society.

New Internet Resources Presentation

Two new internet resources: National Assembly Voting Records and Advocacy Resource Center websites have been presented on December 15, 2009 by Civic Development and Partnership Foundation in “Congress” Hotel’s Ballroom.

Zhirayr Edilyan, CDPF Director, opened the presentation ceremony, followed by welcome note of Carel Hofstra, OSCE Deputy Head of Office. Afterwards, the goals, structure and possible ways of usage of the websites were presented.

Particularly, the goal of National Assembly Voting results website (nav.cdpf.am) is to ensure easy access to the voting records for wide audience through a simple, systemized and unbiased search system. Website visitors can obtain information on individual or total voting records of NA deputies, factions and parties, as well as voting information on specific legal acts. This information can be used by individuals and organizations to monitor the work of elected officials, to analyze legislative changes and their consistency with pre-election promises, as well as to engage in lobbing activities.

Advocacy Resource Center website (www.arc.am) is a supplementary resource for three resource centers acting in Yerevan, Goris and Vanadzor. The website is aimed primarily to organizations involved in advocacy and provides opportunity to get acquainted to latest news and developments in the field, use available educational materials, place information about advocacy organizations and initiatives, participate in thematic discussions using on-line forum, network with local and European civil society organizations.

After the presentation of the websites, the participants asked their questions to the presenters in order to get more detailed information.

More than 50 representatives of civil society organizations, Mass Media, National Assembly, embassies, international organizations and development agencies participated in the event.
