Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics

General Description

Although not new in the developed part of the world, the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and ethical leadership are making first steps in gaining popularity in developing countries, with Armenia being not an exception. Nowadays many Armenians can hardly explain what constitutes to be a good corporate citizen, which is quite often confused with engaging in charitable activities. It is obvious that any for-profit entity is mainly concerned with earning and accumulating wealth, but the current worldwide trend is that this is not the only determinant of their existence and long-term success. More and more businesses realize that they do not operate in a vacuum; continuous interaction with different stakeholders is critical, with serious considerations for the environment, economically vulnerable populations, and the society as a whole.

In light of the above, it is therefore paramount to raise ethical competence and integrity standards of local managers for them to succeed in today's competitive and highly demanding world. With this in mind, the given training is aimed at familiarizing the audience with the theoretical framework for corporate social responsibility and business ethics, addressing the issues of its practical application, and exploring its contributions and limitations to the society.

Civil Society Day Preparation Phase Launched!!!

Each year, in coordination with Independence, on September 19th Civil Society Day is celebrated in Armenia. The objective of this Day is to disseminate the idea of civil society among citizens and make them an integral part of this idea. That’s why every year the holiday bears the slogan "We Are the Civil Society".

The first time Civil Society Day was celebrated in Armenia was 2009. Civic Development and Partnership Foundation (CDPF) and its partners organized a photo contest and exhibition named "Civil Society through my Eyes", accompanied by a concert program in Yerevan, at Lovers’ Park. Various civil society organizations, state and international organizations, as well as ordinary citizens participated in this festive event.

In 2010, celebratory events were devoted to volunteerism since it is one of the cornerstones of civil society and were aimed at promoting active civic participation. It is remarkable that in 2010, the number of organizers, participants and visitors incredibly increased; in parallel with this, the Civil Society Celebrations also widened to not only Yerevan, but also Goris and Armavir regions. This proves the need for Civil Society Day on September 19th to be recognized as a state holiday.

In 2011, Civil Society Day was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of RA Independence. Events were organized over 3 consecutive days. On September 17th, a Flash Mob dedicated to civil society was presented on Northern Avenue in Yerevan. Around 60 young and enthusiastic people participated in the Flash Mob. With colored boxes they built a "Wall" on Northern Avenue with the following message: "Let’s Build Civil Society". On September 18th, in Vanadzor, a photo and essay contest and concert were organized by "NGO Center" NGO. On September 19th, a press conference dedicated to Civil Society Day celebrations was held. The speakers were from different sectors of civil society and they presented their sector developments, achievements, problems met and the successes achieved during the 20 years of independence.

2012 will not be an exemption and this year Armenian citizens will again have the opportunity to speak about civil society in Armenia and its achievements.

CDPF invites all interested public organizations to join their efforts with organizing and implementing Civil Society Day events. We are willing to discuss with you the proposed ideas and your participation in the process. For more details, contact Maria Poghosyan, via maria@cdpf.am  tel.: 010 586012, 586013, 096 212696.
