Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics

General Description

Although not new in the developed part of the world, the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and ethical leadership are making first steps in gaining popularity in developing countries, with Armenia being not an exception. Nowadays many Armenians can hardly explain what constitutes to be a good corporate citizen, which is quite often confused with engaging in charitable activities. It is obvious that any for-profit entity is mainly concerned with earning and accumulating wealth, but the current worldwide trend is that this is not the only determinant of their existence and long-term success. More and more businesses realize that they do not operate in a vacuum; continuous interaction with different stakeholders is critical, with serious considerations for the environment, economically vulnerable populations, and the society as a whole.

In light of the above, it is therefore paramount to raise ethical competence and integrity standards of local managers for them to succeed in today's competitive and highly demanding world. With this in mind, the given training is aimed at familiarizing the audience with the theoretical framework for corporate social responsibility and business ethics, addressing the issues of its practical application, and exploring its contributions and limitations to the society.

CSO Sustainability Index for

Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia

Armenia

Civil society has played a leading, often pivotal, role in fostering democratic change across Europe and Eurasia over the last decade and a half.  Civic organizations have stood on the ‘front lines’ of democratization: as key protagonists in democratic breakthroughs; taking on new, expanded roles in advocacy, oversight, and serving citizens; and in some countries responding to more restrictive laws and political environments.

Civic Development and Partnership Foundation has organized the Armenia Launch Event for CSO Sustainability Index 2013 on September 16, 2014, at Ani Hotel, Yerevan.

Armen Ghalumyan greeted participants and presented the agenda of the event. Afterwards, Karen Hilliard had an opening speech presenting the background of CSO SI Index, USAID's support in direction of civil society development in Armenia and expectations from the upcoming legislative changes in CSO field in Armenia. MoJ Deputy Minister Artyom Geghamyan mentioned that the Sustainability Index report is useful for highlighting the needs of the sector and  emphasized the collaboration between the Government, especially the Ministry of Justice and CSO aimed at getting better sustainability score in further years.

After the introductory speeches, a presentation on 2013 CSO Sustainability Index in Armenia was delivered by Tatevik Margaryan, including brief introduction on the methodology of CSO Sustainability Index, description of seven dimensions of the Index, and a concluding remark on the comparison of Armenia with other countries in CIS region.

Speakers from different organizations were also invited for this event to present the development trends and various achievements of CSO sector. Aram Orbelyan, Senior Partner at Concern-Dialogue Law Firm, former MoJ Deputy Minister, presented 2012-2013 developments in CSO legal environment. Lilit Chitchyan, Oxfam Armenia Accountable Governance Program Officer/ CSPN Advocacy Coordinator, made her presentation about CSO experience in street fundraising. She presented street fundraising experience in different Armenian towns such as Vayk, Yeghegnadzor, Meghri, Sisian etc. Lusine Hakobyan, former Lead of CIVICUS CSI presented the results of CIVICUS civil society rapid assessment 2014, particularly related to civic participation and activism. Seyran Martirosyan from Sakharov Human Rights Center NGO Shirak branch introduced the experience of Civil Society School in CSO capacity development. Finally, Artashes Torozyan, Director of Partnership and Teaching NGO, presented the achievements of the network of Southern Armenian CSOs in stimulating civic activism in communities. The presentations were followed by a question-answer session and a discussion.

The event was attended by 45 participants, including 18 NGOs representatives, 1 government representative, 1 business community representative, 7 media representatives, and 18 donor and international organizations.
